Daniel Baig

I am a PhD student at the University of Southampton within the String Theory and Holography Group in the Southampton Theory Astrophysics and Gravity (STAG) research centre. I completed my undergraduate studies at University College London (UCL) in theoretical physics and then went on to do Part III of the Mathematical Tripos at the University of Cambridge.

I am interested in many aspects of theoretical physics and enjoy using simulations to understand the mathematics underlying various physical phenomena. Across projects in biophysics, astrophysics and particle physics, I have utilised numerical models and simulations to understand complex systems, using methods such as Monte Carlo simulation, PDE solvers and statistical uncertainty analysis, mainly in Python. I enjoy taking a problem from its mathematical formulation to working code, and then to a clear explanation, whether in a report, a poster or presentation.

My PhD research focuses on gauge/gravity duality and black holes, specifically Euclidean wormholes and supergravity. Previously I carried out research in biophysics at The Francis Crick Institute and the Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University (SLCU), astrophysics at the University of Oxford, and particle physics at UCL. I am always open to exploring other areas of science, including applications beyond physics.
